Sick in America

Well, on my way home from a rave yesterday morning, (a VERY lame rave, but that is another story) I heard a song on the radio titled “Stuck In America” and I couldn’t help but break out laughing. (and of course no one else in the car really got the joke) But, alas, that was the high point of my evening/morning, because this story, while lame, is still tragic. At this rave, I saw (tripped over to tell you the truth) a 6 to 8 year old boy, and his YOUNGER sister. (along with a slue of other preteens) I thought to myself, “What kind of fucked up parents would allow their children to go to such an event?!” (and what child that age would want to be there) Surprisingly, I later found out that the parents of these two children were there too, making this tale that much more pitiful. I am not sure which to feel more sorry for, the parents, or the children; although I have a sneaking suspicion that it is the children for whom I should feel sorry. In America’s on going effort to make the world a “safer place”, (or what I like to call “Americanization”) we have gone as far as to make raving a family event. I know this country strives to be politically correct, but I think that is pushing it’s meaning too far. These events are not meant for young children, (or their strange parents) and by including them, it lessens the meaning and kills the atmosphere of the entire occasion. At one point in the night, the parents actually asked a DJ if he could turn down the music. (at which the smart ass’s reply was turning it up) When I got fed up (for various reasons) and left at about 1:30 AM, the family was still there, propping each other up, and forcing each other to smile. The hilarity of it all is that neither the children nor the parents seemed to do anything resembling having fun of any sort the entire night. I’m not one hundred percent sure why they were there, but it was the strangest thing I have seen in a while; however, this is America, what did I expect?
