Excuses
I was sitting here, minding my own business when someone Imed me on ICQ. A complete stranger, bored I suppose, looking for something to do. I was in the middle of working on this very site, but decided to stay and talk nonetheless. We started talking about relationships, and of course I had to ask my “teenage girl dating someone older” question, (in which she held true to the theory) and then we moved on to what makes us make such relationship choices. After she went to sleep, I got to thinking about a new site I stumbled across the other day; which has an entire section dedicated to their loves, and a section titled, “The Crazy Things I’ve Done For Love”. What makes us do these things? What part of our mind rationalizes these things, and tells us it is all right to proceed? So, I dug a bit deeper into my thoughts and recalled something I learned my sophomore year. Besides how to properly spell sophomore, I believe I learned that the Hypothalamus controls the four F’s. (Fighting, fleeing, feeding, and fu…mating) Meaning that one little part of our brain controls our very existences, our reactions, our needs, our wants. Why should such complex emotions be shoved into a single part of our brain, tucked away to leave so much of our minds unused? And why can that single part, govern our instincts, our propagation, our very survival? That single portion manages to contradict every rational thought we concoct. Why the hell do we need it?! We would survive without it, we would still have emotions, and free will; we would just be without that constant ticking in our skulls. The sound that drives us into our most horrid faults, our greatest crimes, and our worst betrayals. The sound that pushes us to kill, to rape, to feast; the sound that drives our very being. I believe I once told a friend that there is an obsession within us all, and that this obsession to need someone was “God’s Folly”, but I no longer think that. If you look into the animal kingdom, especially the portion with similar social and mental structure to ours, you see that Love does not exist. I said the Hypothalamus controls mating, that is just the act to reproduce, what art of our brain controls love? Very few life forms demonstrate any sort of lovingness, and it cannot be proven that in fact, that is love they are displaying. Humans are the only creatures we know of to demonstrate love as we define it, and Humans are the only creatures who would be stupid enough to pervert something so hollowed into a source of pleasure. What does that mean? To me it means, that Humans do not know love, if they would take such a precious gift and throw it away, then they are not capable of understanding it, of appreciating it. They are just making excuses to justify the actions of a small portion of their brain, and cover stories to cover the guilt or pain in their lives.
